Abstract

Buddhism has a history spanning over 2,600 years, originating from the Enlightenment of the Buddha in the Indian subcontinent. His teachings, known as the Buddha-Dhamma, spread widely throughout Asia and later reached the Western world across multiple dimensions, including spirituality, psychology, and philosophy. The historical development of Buddhism demonstrates a remarkable capacity to adapt to social, cultural, and political transformations while consistently preserving the essential core of the Dhamma. These historical lessons therefore extend beyond accounts of the past, offering an important conceptual framework for understanding how Buddha-Dhamma can contribute meaningfully to addressing the complexities and challenges of the rapidly changing modern world.
